CAMP AO-WA-KIYA

We want to thank all those who have donated to help send kids to camp so far! We have one of our weeks of camp over and have one more week of camp where the kids will be spending August 17th-22nd at Springhill. We are still receiving donations for and Adopt-A-Camper is still running for those who would like to participate in blessing these kids.

I would like to take this time to let all of you know about how the first week went. We had four kids from the Alexander site go to the first week of camp held at Ao-Wa-Kiya. Lou Mojica the site leader at Alexander was head counselor for the boys cabin and his assistant counselor was his son Nathanial who does the sound at Alexander. They had Jamari Flowers and Marquis Jenkins along with several other boys in their cabin. Annastasia Debose was the assistant counselor in the Gentleness cabin along with yours truly as counselor for the girls. We had nine girls total including Ashanti and Shareice from the Alexander site.

All four of the kids worked hard at the Power House Carwash to help raise money for camp as well as collect returnables.

When asked to tell what their favorite thing about camp was the kids responded by saying the zipline, tubing, food, meeting new friends. I have to say my favorite response was “Ms. Char I liked Chapel the best!” Wow, isn’t it awesome to know that these kids are hungering after righteousness and the word of God. I know that this response wasn’t to make me feel good or an act, it was a genuine response. The girl who said it was changed in one chapel on the Tuesday session in the morning something struck her that was said that just stuck with her. In that specific chapel, Mike talked about being hot or cold and how God said that He would spit you out of his mouth if you were luke-warm. She was talking to me about it and said with tears streaming down her face how she would be good in church and act good while she was there; And the next day at school or at home and sometimes the same day; She would not be so good and make poor choices and sometimes ridicule or be mean to other kids…and she didn’t want to be two different people any more, she didn’t want to be cold or luke-warm she wanted to be hot, on fire, for God. And that night when she made that commitment, she was changed from the inside out. I realized in that moment that she got it! I mean, she totally got what most of us adult Christians don’t ever get! That is to say she realized she was being doubleminded. How many of us adults or supposedly mature Christians really get that and want to change? Instead a lot of us stay in a ‘luke-warm’ state. That is what it is about, seeing hearts changed and hope restored. I have to say, Wow! God is truly good and camp is an awesome tool to minister the gospel, and plant the word of God in hearts of children, and deeply let it take root and grow and bring forth fruit. Families are touched and changed through what God does in these little ones.

On the way, home these kids were singing camp worship songs and it was truly worship at one of its best moment’s. We are so blessed to have the Power House van the kids watched a video and sang and we stopped at Mickey D’s on the way home for lunch. The kids say they want to go again next year if they get the opportunity! I say let’s make sure that we give them this opportunity again!

Ashanti, called and wanted to go to church on the Sunday after camp so she was picked up and was able to attend the Sunday morning service.

Please be prayerful about the next week at camp in August we hope to be able to send 12 kids from our other site’s that is 16 altogether with the four that was already sent. We are believing that we will raise the funds available at the Power House Car Show to be held on July 19th.
